Hiking Mount Vesuvius

From the moment you arrive at Mount Vesuvius, you will be stunned. As you begin your climb up the historic volcano, you will notice a wide variety of beautiful colors and textures in the terrain. Colors ranging from deep reds, shinny black glass, and even foggy crystallized sparkles cover the ground. Coral like rocks and subtle plants stick out of crevasses. The farther you progress the air thins, the temperature drops, and the clouds become closer and dense.
As you pass the first rickety souvenir shack, you will notice that Naples appears even smaller in the distance. Rest for a moment and take it all in. As you reach the top, staring down into the active leviathan it is overwhelming. Ghostly gases escape from precarious fractures and openings along the volcano walls and disappear just as quickly. On a clear day, the clouds will break and you will have the most beautiful view of Naples and the island of Capri. Stop at the second souvenir stand and browse; everything is stamped to show it was purchased at the peak of Vesuvius. Although the volcano is a time bomb, you will find it upsetting to hike back down. The decent is equally exciting and a great time to pick up volcano rock (makes for a great gift).

What to know before you go...
*There are many types of tours to Mount Vesuvius. Viator has some wonderful options. However, if you're cruising, choose an excursion offered by the cruise line.
*You should be in good health to hike the volcano as the trails become steep.
*You must have good walking shoes.
*Bring a bottle of water.
*Carry a light jacket-it gets chilly!
*There are two stands on the volcano that sell snacks, souvenirs, and even wine. Bring a backpack, some extra cash, and indulge!
*Before your hike, use the public restroom at the bottom of the volcano. There are no bathrooms at the top.
*And of course, have your camera ready!

  1. Looks superb, Katherine. We were there with our small boy many years ago but didn't get to the summit.
